Frequently Asked Questions

What is the phonetic pronunciation of “Pavisor”?
Pavisor \Pa*vis"or\, n. (Mil. Antiq.)

From where did the name “Pavisor” come?

(n.) During medieval times, a specially trained soldier who carried a large shield known as a Pavise.

What is Pavisor’s primary business mission and key target markets?

During medieval times the Pavisor was known as a shield-carrying soldier who fought to defend the kingdom against enemy attackers.  Today, the term Pavisor is recognized as an innovative industry partner helping federal agencies to protect computer and network infrastructures and data being transmitted over networks.

What kind of “data protection” solutions are offered by Pavisor?

Pavisor combines its PavisProtect Data Protection Assessment services along with NIAP registered and other approved information assurance products to help federal agencies shield themselves against the loss of sensitive, confidential and classified data and/or network-initiated identity theft.

What is network-initiated Identity Theft?

The act of someone(s) locating and stealing personally identifiable information (PII) being transmitted electronically (oftentimes referred to as “data-in-motion”), over a data network.

How does Pavisor correct data-in-motion vulnerabilites?

Working directly with the US Department of Defense and leading Financial Services Companies throughout the US over the past three years, Pavisor engineers fully developed and are now offering its unique PavisProtect 2.0 Data Protection Assessment Service to find and fix actual or potential data leakage threats.

What is PavisProtect 2.0 and is it hardware, software or services?

PavisProtect 2.0 is a unique data protection assessment service bundled with an extrusion prevention appliance and installed on federal agency networks to detect actual and/or potential vulnerabilities to the loss of sensitive, confidential, classified and identity information.  Once the assessment is completed by Pavisor engineers, the federal agency is provided with a 20 page, professionally prepared report detailing exact and potential data protection vulnerabilities.  The service includes a combination of NIAP registered hardware and software products approved for use by the federal government.  The basic PavisProtect assessment report also includes an executive summary and mitigation recommendations.

How long does a PavisProtect assessment last and what is required to complete it?

The entire process lasts from two to four weeks.  Normally, the extrusion prevention sensor installation only takes about two hours.  Once the installation is complete, the system is immediately ready for duty and, often times, event alerts are identified system console within minutes.  Two weeks after the system is installed, Pavisor engineers collect all event details and begin work to analyze the alerts.  The alerts are analyzed by a TS cleared data privacy expert under an agency non-disclosure agreement (NDA).  The highly trained, Pavisor data privacy analyst uses carefully developed data inspection techniques, interpretation skills and forensics analyses to compile the report from the collected data.  Once the event detail section is complete, an executive summary and mitigation recommendations are prepared and included with the report.  The process is concluded with an on-site briefing to agency executives.  With over 100 assessments completed, Pavisor engineers are highly trained and capable of minimizing the operational impact on agency services and personnel.

What, if any, company partnerships exist?

On Monday November 6th, Pavisor announced it entered into an exclusive Manufacture’s Representative Agreement with Fidelis Inc. to supply its XPS line of Extrusion Prevention Systems to the US Federal Government.  The agreement provides for Pavisor to sell the entire Fidelis XPS product line through qualified federal government service providers, systems integrators and authorized value added resellers.

What is “extrusion prevention”?

Extrusion prevention is the process of stopping data leakage. Extrusion prevention protects digital assets, prevents leakage of privacy-sensitive information, and thwarts network abuse. As a result, it guards against the losses and liabilities that have significant negative impact on an organization's brand, reputation, and customer trust.  Despite the fact that the majority of security threats have come from insiders, most security tools to date (firewalls and intrusion prevention) have focused on external threats and who has access to information (authentication and access control). While necessary, these controls are insufficient to protect against the risks presented by traffic flowing out of the network.  Fortunately, network security has evolved from managing ports and protocols to managing channels (e.g., e-mail, http, webmail, instant messaging, ftp, telnet, and peer-to-peer communications) and enterprise content. And while firewalls and intrusion prevention systems were adequate to address earlier challenges, only an Extrusion Prevention System® can neutralize threats from new "back channels" and take the security of your network to the next level. (Excerpt from Fidelis Security Systems web site November 2006)

Is the Fidelis system available for a product evaluation?
